फार फार पूर्वी, अयोध्येचे राजे श्रीराम होते. ते खूप चांगले, धर्मनिष्ठ आणि प्रजेवर प्रेम करणारे होते.
एके दिवशी राजे रामांना चौदा वर्षांसाठी वनवासात जावे लागले. त्यांच्यासोबत पत्नी सीता आणि भाऊ लक्ष्मण गेले.
वनवासात रावणाने सीतेचे अपहरण केले. रामांनी वानर सेनेच्या मदतीने लंकेवर हल्ला केला. हनुमानाने खूप मदत केली.
रामांनी रावणाचा वध केला आणि सीतेला मुक्त केले. चौदा वर्षांनंतर राम अयोध्येला परत आले. अयोध्यावासींनी आनंदाने दिवे लावले — संपूर्ण नगर उजळून निघाले!
त्या दिवसापासून कार्तिक अमावास्येला दरवर्षी दिवे लावून हा आनंद साजरा करतो — हीच दिवाळी!
The story behind Diwali: King Ram of Ayodhya was a just and beloved ruler. He had to go into exile for 14 years along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshman.
During the exile, the demon king Ravan kidnapped Sita. Ram, with the help of Hanuman and the monkey army, attacked Lanka. He defeated Ravan and freed Sita.
After 14 years, Ram returned to Ayodhya. The joyful people of Ayodhya lit oil lamps to welcome him — the entire city was illuminated!
Every year on the new moon of Kartik month, we light lamps to celebrate that joyous day — this is Diwali, the Festival of Lights!
दिवाळीची रात्र होती. आकाश काळ्याभोर अंधाराने भरले होते. पण आदित्यच्या घरात सगळ्यात जास्त उजेड होता.
आदित्य सहा वर्षांचा होता. त्याला या वर्षी एकट्याने दिवे लावायचे होते. “मी करतो! मी मोठा झालो आहे!” तो म्हणाला.
आजोबांनी त्याला एक छोटी पणती दिली. त्यात तेल ओतले, वात लावली. आदित्यने काडी पेटवली — पण वारा आला आणि दिवा विझला.
आदित्य निराश झाला. “वारा का विझवतो?” तो आजोबांना विचारते झाला. आजोबा हसले — “वारा खूप जोरात असेल तर दिवा विझतो. पण तू दिव्याभोवती हात धरलास तर?”
आदित्यने परत प्रयत्न केला. यावेळी त्याने दोन्ही हात दिव्याभोवती धरले. काडी पेटवली — दिवा लागला! वारा आला, पण दिवा तेवत राहिला.
“आजोबा, दिवा लागला!” आदित्य आनंदाने ओरडला. आजोबांनी त्याला जवळ घेतले — “आदित्या, आयुष्यातही असेच असते. वारा येईल — अडचणी येतील. पण आपण एकमेकांना साथ दिली तर दिवा कधीच विझत नाही.”
त्या रात्री आदित्यने अंगणात वीस दिवे लावले. त्याचे घर सगळ्यात जास्त उजळले होते. 🪔✨
It was Diwali night. The sky was pitch dark. But Aditya’s house had the most light of all.
Six-year-old Aditya wanted to light the lamps himself this year. His grandfather gave him a small clay lamp (panati). He poured oil, placed the wick and struck a match — but the wind came and blew it out.
Aditya was sad. “Why does the wind blow it out?” Grandfather smiled — “If you shelter the flame with your hands, what happens?”
Aditya tried again. This time he held both hands around the lamp. The flame lit — and stayed lit even as the wind blew.
Grandfather held him close — “In life too, difficulties will come like wind. But when we stand by each other, the light never goes out.”
That night Aditya lit twenty lamps. His house shone the brightest of all. 🪔✨

आज दिवाळी आहे! आमच्या घरात सगळे लवकर उठतात.
आई सकाळी अभ्यंगस्नान करते. बाबा आकाश कंदील लावतात.
बहीण अंगणात सुंदर रांगोळी काढते. भाऊ फटाके उडवतो.
संध्याकाळी आम्ही लक्ष्मीपूजन करतो. सगळ्यांना फराळ देतो.
रात्री घर दिव्यांनी उजळते. “शुभ दिवाळी!” असे सगळ्यांना सांगतो.
Today is Diwali! Everyone wakes up early in our house.
Mother does the auspicious bath (abhyang snan). Father lights the sky lantern (aakash kandil).
Sister draws beautiful rangoli in the courtyard. Brother bursts firecrackers.
In the evening we do Lakshmi puja. We give faraal (festival sweets) to everyone.
At night the house is lit up with lamps. We wish everyone “Shubh Diwali!”
