वटपौर्णिमा — Vat Purnima in Marathi for Kids
फार फार पूर्वी सावित्री नावाची एक बुद्धिमान, शूर राजकन्या होती. तिने स्वतः आपला पती निवडला — सत्यवान, एक गरीब पण थोर मनाचा राजकुमार.
पण ऋषींनी भविष्य सांगितले — “सत्यवान एक वर्षातच मरणार!” सगळ्यांनी सावित्रीला दुसरा पती निवडायला सांगितले. पण सावित्री म्हणाली — “माझा निर्णय झाला आहे. मी सत्यवानाशीच लग्न करेन!”
एक वर्षानंतर जंगलात सत्यवान झाडावरून खाली पडला. यमराज — मृत्यूचे देव — त्याचा जीव घेण्यासाठी आले. सावित्री यमराजांच्या मागे चालू लागली.
यमराज म्हणाले — “परत जा!” सावित्री म्हणाली — “जिथे माझा पती जातो तिथे मी जाते!” यमराज थक्क झाले. त्यांनी तिला तीन वर मागायला सांगितले — फक्त सत्यवानाचे प्राण सोडून.
सावित्रीने चतुराईने असे वर मागितले की शेवटी यमराजांना सत्यवानाला जिवंत करावेच लागले! प्रेम आणि बुद्धीचा विजय झाला!
हे घडले वडाच्या झाडाखाली. म्हणून ज्येष्ठ पौर्णिमेला विवाहित स्त्रिया वडाची पूजा करतात — सावित्रीसारख्या समर्पण, धाडस आणि बुद्धी यांचे स्मरण करतात!
The Savitri-Satyavan story: Savitri was a wise and brave princess who chose her own husband — Satyavan, a noble but poor prince. When the sage Narad predicted that Satyavan would die within a year, everyone urged her to choose another husband. She refused.
A year later, Satyavan fell ill in the forest. Yamraj — the god of death — came to take his life. Savitri followed Yamraj. He told her to go back. She said: “Wherever my husband goes, I go!”
Amazed by her devotion, Yamraj offered her three boons — except Satyavan’s life. Savitri cleverly asked for boons that made it impossible for Yamraj NOT to return Satyavan’s life!
This happened under a banyan tree. So on Jyeshtha Purnima, married women worship the banyan tree — remembering Savitri’s love, courage and brilliant mind!
वटपौर्णिमेच्या सकाळी मेघा आईबरोबर वडाच्या झाडाजवळ गेली. आई धागा घेऊन गेली होती. मेघाला खूप प्रश्न होते.
“आई, वडाला धागा का गुंडाळतात?” मेघाने विचारले.
आई वडाला धागा गुंडाळत बोलू लागली — “मेघा, सावित्रीची गोष्ट माहीत आहे का? ती इतकी बुद्धिमान होती की तिने यमराजांशी चर्चा करून आपल्या पतीला परत आणले!”
“यमराज म्हणजे मृत्यूचे देव?” मेघाने श्वास रोखून विचारले.
“हो! पण सावित्री घाबरली नाही. ती शांतपणे बोलली, हुशारीने उत्तर दिले. तिच्या बुद्धीने तिने विजय मिळवला!” आई म्हणाली.
मेघाने वडाला हात लावला. झाड खूप थंड होते, मजबूत होते. “आई, हे झाड किती मोठे आहे!”
“हो! वड शेकडो वर्षे जगतो. त्याच्या पारंब्या खाली येतात आणि नवीन मुळे होतात. जणू कुटुंबच! — एक झाड, अनेक फांद्या, सगळे जोडलेले.”
मेघाने मनात म्हटले — “मी पण सावित्रीसारखी हुशार आणि धाडसी होणार!” 🌳💚
On Vat Purnima morning, Megha went with her mother to the banyan tree. Mother carried a sacred thread. Megha had many questions.
“Mother, why do we wind thread around the banyan?” she asked.
As she wound the thread, mother told the story — “Do you know about Savitri? She was so intelligent that she argued with Yamraj himself and brought her husband back!”
“Yamraj — the god of death?” Megha asked with bated breath.
“Yes! But Savitri wasn’t afraid. She spoke calmly, answered cleverly. Her intelligence won the day!”
Megha touched the banyan trunk — cool and strong. “Mother, this tree is so big!”
“Yes! The banyan lives for hundreds of years. Its aerial roots come down and become new trunks — like a family — one tree, many branches, all connected.”
Megha thought to herself — “I will be as smart and brave as Savitri!” 🌳💚
“सावित्री कशी होती?” — What was Savitri like?

आई सूत गुंडाळते. फुले आणि हळद-कुंकू वाहते.
आजी सावित्रीची गोष्ट सांगतात. आम्ही ऐकतो.
“सावित्रीसारखे हुशार आणि धाडसी व्हा!” — आजी म्हणतात. 🌳
