The human pyramid breaks the pot and everyone shouts “Govinda!”
फार फार पूर्वी मथुरेचा राजा कंस खूप क्रूर होता. त्याने आपल्याच बहिणीला देवकीला तुरुंगात टाकले. भविष्यवाणी होती — देवकीचा आठवा मुलगा कंसाचा वध करेल.
श्रावण वद्य अष्टमीच्या रात्री मध्यरात्री देवकीला मुलगा झाला — श्रीकृष्ण! त्या रात्री मुसळधार पाऊस पडत होता. वीज चमकत होती.
कृष्णाचे बाबा वासुदेव यांनी कृष्णाला टोपलीत घेतले. यमुना नदी ओलांडली. शेषनागाने त्यांच्यावर छत्र धरले. गोकुळात नंद-यशोदांकडे कृष्णाला सोडले.
गोकुळात कृष्ण लहानाचा मोठा झाला. त्याला दही-लोणी खूप आवडत असे. तो आणि मित्र मिळून उंच हंड्यांतील दही-लोणी चोरत. म्हणून दहीहंडी!
मोठेपणी कृष्णाने कंसाचा वध केला — सत्याचा विजय झाला!
The story: The cruel King Kansa imprisoned his sister Devaki after a prophecy that her eighth son would kill him.
On Shravan Ashtami at midnight, in a storm of rain and lightning, Devaki gave birth to Krishna! Father Vasudeva placed the baby in a basket, crossed the river Yamuna — with Shesha Nag shielding them — and left Krishna with foster parents Nanda and Yashoda in Gokul.
Krishna grew up in Gokul. He loved curd and butter. He and his friends would steal from the tall pots hung by the gopas and gopis — hence Dahi Handi!
When he grew up, Krishna returned and defeated Kansa — truth won!
दहीहंडीच्या दिवशी आर्यनची टीम जमली होती. सहा मुले. हंडी खूप उंच होती.
“आर्यन, तू सगळ्यात लहान आहेस — तू वरती जा!” मित्र म्हणाले. आर्यनने वर बघितले. खूप उंच होती!
त्याच्या मनात भीती आली. “मी नाही जाऊ शकत.” तो म्हणाला.
तेवढ्यात त्याला आजीने सांगितलेली कृष्णाची गोष्ट आठवली. वासुदेव मध्यरात्री पावसात नदी ओलांडले — फक्त मुलाला वाचवायला. भीती होती, पण ते थांबले नाहीत.
आर्यनने दीर्घ श्वास घेतला. “ठीक आहे. मी जातो!”
एक-एक पायरी चढत तो वरती गेला. टीमने त्याला आधार दिला. हात पुढे केला — हंडी फुटली!
“गोविंदा आला रे आला!” सगळे ओरडले. आर्यनवर दही पडले. तो ओला झाला, पण खळखळून हसला. “भीती असली तरी पुढे गेलो — कृष्णासारखा!” 🪣🎉
On Dahi Handi day, Aryan’s team of six boys gathered. The pot was very high.
“Aryan, you’re the smallest — you go to the top!” his friends said. Aryan looked up. It was very high! Fear crept in.
Then he remembered the story Grandmother had told — of Vasudeva crossing the stormy river at midnight, just to protect his son. He was afraid, but he didn’t stop.
Aryan took a deep breath. “Alright. I’ll go!” Step by step he climbed. His team supported him. He reached out — the pot broke!
“Govinda aala re aala!” everyone shouted. Curd fell all over Aryan. He was soaked but laughing. “I was afraid but I went ahead — just like Krishna!” 🪣🎉
“आर्यनला भीती का वाटली?” — Why was Aryan afraid?
“त्याने काय केले?” — What did he decide to do?
“तुम्हाला कधी भीती वाटली होती पण पुढे गेलात?” — When were you afraid but went ahead anyway?
आज गोकुळाष्टमी आहे! कृष्णाचा जन्मदिवस!
आई पाळणा सजवते. बाबा कृष्णाची मूर्ती ठेवतात.
आम्ही “गोविंदा आला रे” गातो. मध्यरात्री जन्म होतो!
दुसऱ्या दिवशी दहीहंडी फोडतो. “गोविंदा!” म्हणतो.
सगळ्यांना दही-लोणी मिळते. खूप आनंद होतो!
Today is Janmashtami! Krishna’s birthday!
Mother decorates the cradle. Father places Krishna’s idol.
We sing “Govinda aala re”. At midnight the birth is celebrated!
Next day we break the Dahi Handi. We shout “Govinda!”
Everyone gets curd and butter. There is great joy!
