Try this at home: In Marathi ज्ञ is said dnya (द्न्य). Hindi speakers say gya for the same shape. Same letter, different sound — teach the Marathi one.
अ is already inside: ज्ञ on its own is read “dnya” — the vowel अ is built in. You never write ज्ञ+अ separately.
🔗 जोडाक्षर — how this letter is built
ज्ञ is ज and ञ joined. The हलन्त stroke under ज removes its अ, so ज् joins straight to ञ. Note the sound: in Marathi this is said dnya, while in Hindi the same shape is said gya. Same written letter, two different pronunciations across languages.

📊 विशेष अक्षरे — the three special letters
These three sit at the end of the मराठी मुळाक्षरे. ळ is a true letter of its own. क्ष and ज्ञ are not — they are two letters joined into one shape (जोडाक्षर), kept in the chart because they appear so often.
| अक्षर | Roman | रचना | प्रकार |
|---|---|---|---|
| ळ | La | मूर्धन्य | स्वतंत्र अक्षर |
| क्ष | kSha | क् + ष | जोडाक्षर |
| ज्ञ | dnya | ज् + ञ | जोडाक्षर |
ळ is proudly Marathi. Hindi has no ळ at all — a Hindi speaker reading शाळा will say शाला. ळ also lives in Gujarati, Kannada, Tamil and Malayalam, but its absence from Hindi is why मराठी and हिंदी sound different from the very first words a child learns: बाळ, शाळा, डोळा, वेळ, सकाळ.
